One Minute Film Challenge Evaluation - Warm Bodies

For the challenge my team consisted of 4 students: Myself, May, Jenny and Mos

Preparation Process
^
This trailer of the movie largely influenced the scenes of the movie we chose to take as we thought the important scenes of the movie would have been selected in the making of this trailer, and the scenes in the trailer would be a good representation of the movie.

^
This is the main scenes from the movie which we tried to replicate. As you can see the angles of the scene which we took are quite different from the movie, as this was the first time we were shooting a video and we weren't experienced with angles.

 Final Outcome

^
We chose to make "A one minute version of an entire film" from this list of choices 1.An interrogation 2.A heist 3.A one minute version of an entire film
4. A one minute shot for shot (identical) remake of scene from a film. Due to the fact that we thought it would be a interesting experience to attempt a 1 minute version of a film we enjoyed.

Deciding on an idea
Our thought process on coming to the conclusion to do the 1 minute film challenge on the movie Warm Bodies directed by Jonathan Levine, went smoothly.  Of course each of the team members had interests in different genres of film, however we easily agreed on Warm Bodies. To do so, we had to research  "teen films" on google, this is because this is one of the categories of film we had in common. Along with surfing though our search results we also watch trailers of the movies we were considering such as The Fault in Our Stars and 17 Again. We came to the conclusion of Warm Bodies as we thought the storyline was quite simple and we were capable of telling the story within 1 minute. We also took the mis-en-scenes and cameraworks of the movie into consideration. We then decided on the scenes we were able to shoot, scenes we may face difficulties shooting and found adaptations. Parts of the movie were also done with voiceovers which we were able to do with a microphone we had at the time.
Working together on filming

I felt that the film with my team of 4 people went quite well, we each had similar levels of duties during the filming process, however there were moments we were unsure of which scene to film next as we have not recently watch Warm Bodies. I believe that each of us was open to each others ideas and took each idea into careful consideration of how we would be able to act on them. Moreover, we also took turns helping with  setting the camera in the correct position and acting. I helped angling the camera whenever I was not needed in the scene. Two of us had leading roles in the clip, which I played Julie, May played R and Jenny played Julie's best friend Nora. Our other teamate had Mos had most control over filming especially scenes where May,Jenny and I were all in.
Technical Process
For me I personally found the working with the camera quite easy as I own the same model of camera which we used to film with a canon 700D. However there were scenes which were more difficult as we were not experienced in filming and we had to help each other adjust the tripod in order to create the scene we had in mind.

I especially found the process of editing the clips the most difficult as I felt that there was a lack communication within my team during this process. I personally did not have access to Adobe Premier Pro on my computer which was why I wasn't able to do the editing my self. However, in the end we had help from our classmate Ryu, who was more experience with the software. Even so Ryu did not know how we had pictured the our 1 minute film in our heads. Eventually I communicated with Ryu and we came to the solution for me to edit the footage through a program call "Team Viewer", this allowed me to have control over Ryu's computer which had Adobe Premier Pro.

The process of voiceovers was delegated to May and Jenny, as Jenny owned a microphone which she had experience using and as May played "R" the main character, we thought it would be suitable for May and Jenny to take charge. They had minor difficulties in the process of making the voiceover sound echoey but the end product was successful.

Conclusion
Overall I felt that the our challenge was quite a success even though we exceeded  the 1 minute mark by 9 seconds, we were able to maintain the comedy perspective which we were going for. We overcame the challenge of working with new softwares for editing managed to finish the clip in the end. Everyones strengths were put to use in the process for example May's experience in SFX makeup were used in an attempt to recreate "R's" pale face.

If we were able to do this challenge again, I would hope that everyone in my team would have equal contribution to editing, acting and filming. I wished we had written a plan of the scenes in chronological order as this would allow all of us to be able to edit without the need to know the film by heart. If we were to have the opportunity to have more time and film in other locations outside of school, I believe the finishing product would be even better.
